A CHRISTCHURCH PRESS PROJECT

Thomas Patrick
The Cressy

Original information:
Thomas Patrick was three when he emigrated to Canterbury with his family, who were of Wesleyan faith − Joseph (38), an agricultural labourer, and Alice (30), and siblings Elizabeth (10), David (8), Maria (6), Smith (5), Harriett (1), and Joseph (infant). In 1900, Thomas was living at Styx and his brother David at Ashburton.

Readers' response:
According to the family, Patrick is spelt incorrectly and should be Pattrick. At some stage, Thomas married A. Pearson. David, Thomas’s brother, is referred to in Cyril R. Bradwell’s book about the Salvation Army, Fight the Good Fight, as he had been a notorious gambler and drunkard and had been converted. The book also mentions the death of David’s wife and his involvement in the founding of the Army’s work in Oxford, North Canterbury.2
