Thomas Hewitt
The Cressy

Original information:
Thomas Hewitt (spelt Hewett on the passenger lists) (1825-1903), a carpenter, emigrated to Canterbury with his wife Emma (19). There was also a Charles Hewitt (1820-1870), an agricultural labourer, who migrated on the Cressy − this might be Thomas’s brother.

Readers' response:
According to a family member, Thomas and Emma Hewitt were born in Polesworth, Warwickshire, England: Thomas on March 20, 1825, and Emma on May 6, 1833. The couple were married in Polesworth on August 22, 1850, and had 14 children − Samuel (b. December 5, 1851), Thomas Charles (b. 1852), Robert (b. 1854), James (b. May 23, 1855), Charlotte Emma (b. 1856), Sarah Ann (b. June 1, 1857), William Paul (b. December 14, 1859), Elizabeth (b. December 15, 1861), Agnes (b. August 18, 1863), Mathilda (b. April 29, 1866), Joseph (b. August 20, 1867), John Ensor (b. May 24, 1869), Louisa (b. November 29, 1870) and Frank Orton (b. January 25, 1874). Thomas died on November 14, 1903, and is buried at Waddington cemetery, Sheffield. Emma died on April 12, 1910, and at the time resided at 52 Vagues Road, Christchurch.1

Charles Hewitt was definately Thomas Hewitts older brother

He was born in Polesworth in September 1819 and died in NZ in 1870

Although I have an extensive family history for Thomas I have never managed to find descendants for Charles so I f there are any of you out there please let me know

Thomas and Emma's daughter Matilda born 1866, Papanui married Walter John EVANS bc1864 Heathcote Valley on 29 June 1892 at St Marys Church, Heathcote Valley. [Walter was the nephew of Robert and Sarah EVANS who also came out to NZ onboard the Cressy].   Matilda died 6 March 1894 'after a long and painful illness'.  She is buried at Woolston Cemetery, Christchurch, Block C plot 62 with her sister Louisa [who died 25 July 1889 aged 18 years 8 months].

Matilda and Walter EVANS daughter Ida Emma Ilsley EVANS was born 21 July 1893 at Heathcote Valley, Ida died 1981 [Ida married James (Jim) Buchanan WALSH on 28 Nov 1914 at St Marys Church, Heathcote Valley. They had at least 3 children.  Ida, Isobel and Evan WALSH.

Walter is my 1st cousin 4x removed.

According to her obituary, daughter "Ann"  Married 21 June 1873 in Otahuhu, Auckland to Mr George WISEMAN and died December 1926
