Jacob Parish (1842-1907) was eight when he emigrated to Canterbury with his parents, William (1815-1878), a bricklayer, and Hannah (34), and siblings Isabella (10), Isaac (1846-1921), William (2), Elizabeth (infant), and a female infant (born at sea). Jacob apparently ploughed Riccarton Racecourse and at Yaldhurst. His father, William, was an early wheatgrower in Canterbury and then opened the George and Dragon Hotel on South Road.
