Emon (or Enon) was a labourer, but he did eventually own land, probably near Heathcote. By 1900, he had retired and was living in the city. On March 9, 1874, he married Frances Sophia Pentecost at St Andrews Presbyterian Church, Tuam Street.
Frances’s mother, Frances Meek, had married Emon’s brother, Edmund, about one year earlier, and her brother, Isaac Henry Pentecost, married Emon’s niece, Clara Jane Smart.
